Small habits, big changes!

The 1% rule revolves around making daily improvements amounting to just 1% in any area of our lives. These seemingly minor adjustments may not be immediately noticeable, but they have a compounding effect over time, leading to remarkable results.

One action at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time.

I first learnt about this concept after attending a Matthew Hussey Retreat in Fort Lauderdale in Florida in October 2023, yep, lucky me!  My beautiful friend Gillian Haworth, who is one of Matthew’s trainers on these events, who now has her own business as a coach, invited me along and it has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

I went at a time when I wasn’t feeling like I was succeeding in any area of my life. I felt lost, my identity as a Mum completely taking over my life and I had lost sense of who I was pre-children, can anyone relate?!

It might sound cliché but the retreat was life changing for me.  On that amazing week, immersing myself in the Fort Lauderdale sun with other like-minded women, I worked hard to define my purpose, develop a blue-print for creating my best life moving forward and develop true core confidence.

This experience has, undoubtedly, led me to where I am today, as the founder of my very own professional organising business.  I built my confidence to take a leap and do something that brings me joy, whilst still connecting with my values to help people and promote positive mental health.  Alongside this huge life change, I have also implemented several 1% shifts since this time which are hugely beneficial for me on a day to day basis and I want to share some of these with you.

Now, I couldn’t possible tell you everything about the retreat in this blog, and to be honest, it is hard to describe just how amazing it was, but one thing that I learnt from that week is that movement and connection are crucial to me as a person so I need to crow-bar these as much as possible into every single day.  So.......

I go outside at least once a day

I connect with people everyday whether this be a phone call to a friend or a chat with a parent on the school run or a conversation with a shop assistant.

I make my bed

I put night cream on

Now these might seem small and insignificant but done consistently over time, these actions mean so much more, having a ripple affect on my sleep, productivity, mental health, skin and confidence.  What do you need to crow-bar as much as possible into each day - is it music, reading, exercise, alone time, meditation......the possibilities are endless.

The 1% rule can be applied to organising if that is an area of your life that you feel would be positive for your well-being moving forward.  Could you put a wash on before you go to bed? Could you put your coat on a hook when you come in rather than throw it on the chair?  Could you make your bed in a morning?  Could you unpack the pram when you get in the house rather than it accumulating days of snacks and toys?  Could you get clothes out for the kids the night before for calmer mornings?

So what holds us back from making these small shifts?  It’s daunting right?

An all or nothing mindset and believe me, I am the Queen of this and continually working hard, with the support of Kasey Jennings (The BodyMind Coach), who facilitated morning movement on the beach on the retreat, to shift this mindset, particularly surrounding my relationship with food.  We are not looking for perfection though; every now and then life gets in the way but most days are better than not at all!  We are human – we want progress, not perfection.

Trying to do too much all at once – and yes, those who know me well know that I am also the Queen of trying to do this!  Why commit to just making the bed every day when you can get up, make the bed, do a workout, take some vitamins, cleanse, tone and moisturise, eat breakfast at the table, and while you are at it, drink more water and be more present with the kids!  Don’t overwhelm yourself with 10 new daily habits that you want to implement.  Start with one and once that is a habit (which research shows takes at least 3 weeks!), consider something else.  Set yourself up for success!

Wrong Reasons – do you think you ‘should’ rather than could and want to.  Trust me, 1% shifts need to align with a genuine motivation otherwise they just won’t stick!

So, start small. Pick one thing that matters to you or that you think will make the world of difference to your everyday or how you feel, clarify ‘why’ you want to do it and most importantly just give it a go!

A 1% shift is all it takes. Imagine where you’ll be in a week, a month or a year from now.  Start that snowball rolling down the hill and watch how it accumulates and gets bigger!

Let me know how you are doing.  I am your number one cheer leader and want to celebrate each small victory with you!

Thank you for reading.
